Also known as germ warfare, biological weapons are designed to spread biological agents (e.g. viruses, bacteria or toxins), causing infection or disease which is intended to kill, incapacitate, or seriously impair the target population. Weapons may be designed to target humans (e.g. anthrax, smallpox or botulism) or agriculture (e.g. plant diseases such as wheat blast, or animal diseases such as foot and mouth disease). These weapons are classified as weapons of mass destruction by the United Nations.
